In honor of the upcoming anniversary of his birth, we spend the hour exploring the political music of Fela Kuti. Born October 15 1938 in Nigeria under British colonial rule, Fela Kuti pioneered the style of music he called Afrobeat, focusing much of his work on directly criticizing the Nigerian military government which followed the formal colonial period. We read excerpts from Fela Kuti's Wahalamusic: Political Resistance Through Song, a chapter from the book Colonial Systems of Control: Criminal Justice in Nigeria by Viviana Sales-Hanna, in between a few of his most politically potent compositions.
